The Brandon Teena Story
A powerful and emotionally moving documentary that delves into the nature of sexual identity as it relates to the senseless injustice of the brutal murder of a young female to male transsexual. In1993, Brandon Teena was a fresh-scrubbed young man of twenty who moved to the small town of Falls City, Nebraska. He soon began dating girls. But the truth came out that he was biologically a woman, a discovery that prompted two of his former friends to beat and rape him.
Available in VHS and DVD formats.
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
1960s international sex symbol Terence Stamp is a transgendered marvel as the mature, demure but tough transsexual Bernadette who teams up with two transvestites on a cross-country trip through Australia's Outback in this rousingly fun cross-dressing musical comedy.
Available in VHS and DVD formats.
Ma Vie en Rose (My Life in Pink)
A precious Belgian film about a little boy who wants to be a little girl, Ma Vie en Rose is a fantastic story about being true to one's self. Ludovic (du Fresne) delights in wearing dresses and makeup, even at inopportune moments like his family's "welcome to the neighborhood" party. While his antics are dismissed as a childish phase, Ludo knows better.
Available in VHS and DVD formats.
Different for Girls
An endearing, highly enjoyable and offbeat romantic transgender comedy. Paul (Graves, who played Scudder in Maurice) and Karl (Mackintosh) were childhood best friends. Separated after nearly 20 years, they meet up again in London. But things have changed a bit: Karl has undergone a sex change operation and is now called Kim.
Available in VHS format.
Boys Don't Cry
One of the best films of 1999, this fictionalized drama focuses on the tragic real-life story of Brandon Teena, a biological woman (Teena Brandon) who decided quite early to live her life as a man – a decision he paid for with his life. Hilary Swank is riveting as Brandon, a sweet, but far-from-perfect 21-year-old drifter who just simply wanted to be a boy and love women – and have them love him.
Available in VHS and DVD formats.
The Adventures of Sebastian Cole
This off-beat independently produced comedy/drama set in a small New York town is a charming tales whose main fault is that it tries to tackle too much. Is it a poignant coming-of-age tale about charismatic 17-year-old Sebastian (Adrian Grenier)? Or a probing drama into the loving but strained relationship between him and his step-father? Or is it a story of the difficulties of a transgendered man-to-woman trying to cope with a rebellious stepson as well as longing for love and understanding in a back-water town?
Available in VHS and DVD formats.
Dame Edna's Neighbourhood Watch Vol. 1-3
Gorgeously attired, fabulously successful and bitingly sarcastic, Dame Edna (played by Barry Humphries), everyone's favorite drag queen and Australia's most startling export since koala steaks is a riotous hoot in this three tape television series originally made for broadcast in Great Britain. Each tape has two episodes and the premise is simple: Dame Edna, with the aid of her heat-seeking gladiolas, chooses three contestants from the all-female studio audience. Unbeknownst to one of them, the mischievous Edna has secretly sent a film crew to one of their homes, gotten into it and now for the entire audience to watch, rummages through drawers, rooms, closets and bathrooms, wittily commenting on the tacky, the obscene and the just plain ordinary.
Available in VHS format.
Dame Edna's Neighbourhood Watch Vol. 4-6
People just can't get enough of Dame Edna! Yes, the gorgeously attired, fabulously successful and bitingly sarcastic, Dame Edna (played by Humphries) is a riotous hoot in this second part of her TV series. Each tape (and there are three in this collection) has two episodes and the premise is simple: Dame Edna chooses three contestants from the audience.

To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar
Destined to be forever referred to as the "American Priscilla," this bit of cross-dressing whimsy lacks that film's exhilaration and sharp character definition, but ultimately pleases with its good humor and spirited performances. Tough guys Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes get in touch with their feminine side as they don sequins and high heels as two New York drag queens who win a preliminary drag contest and ride off towards Hollywood for the finals.
Available in VHS format.
Outrageous!
One of the earliest North American gay-themed films to receive theatrical distribution, Outrageous! is a funny and affecting film about a female impersonator and his touching friendship with a schizophrenic girl. Craig Russell plays a gay hairdresser and star-wannabe who does flawless impressions of Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland, Bette Midler, Mae West and others.
Available in VHS format.
The Birdcage
An often hilariously funny and successfully Americanized, upliftingly pro-gay remake of the French farce La Cage aux Folles. The setting is Miami Beach's hip South Beach where Armand Goldman (Robin Williams) runs an extravagant drag revue called The Birdcage. His longtime lover Albert (Nathan Lane) is the star attraction, billed as Starina. The two men live in an uninhibited, gloriously tacky apartment tended by Agador (a very funny Hank Azaria), their Guatemalan houseboy (think Lucy on steroids).
Available in VHSand DVD formats.
La Cage aux Folles
This frolicsome farce provided some of the first likable gay and transvestite characters for American audiences when it became a huge art-house hit. The comedy centers around two gay lovers (one a drag queen and tempestuous diva) who must pose as mom and dad for "their" son's straight-laced potential in-laws. Non-offensive fun for the whole family. (French with subtitles)
Available in VHS format.
La Cage aux Folles II
This sequel to the popular comedy reunited the original stars (Tognazzi & Serrault) who, as gay lovers Alban and Renato, become involved with spies and are forced to flee the country. Alban's valiant attempts to masquerade as a Sicilian peasant woman is one of the hilarious highlights to this otherwise uneven sequel. (French with English subtitles)
Available in VHS format.
La Cage aux Folles III: The Wedding
Who saw this film when it came out theatrically? Judging from the box office receipts, not many. Gay cabaret star Alban learns he is to inherit a fortune -- but only on the condition that he marry and provide an heir in 18 months. The magic is gone, though Tognazzi and Serrault are still a joy to watch. (Dubbed)
Available in VHS format.
The Gay Deceivers
What has time done to this low-budget '60s comedy about two "perfectly normal" guys who try to evade the draft by posing as homosexual lovers? Is it offensively homophobic drivel or simply a frequently hilarious, naively camp curiosity? Filmed in a contemporary sitcom style, the film's funniest scenes come when our hapless heroes, under investigation by a suspicious Army recruiter, must move in to a gay bungalow complex, populated by the most outrageous gay stereotypes this side of Fairyland.
Available in VHS and DVD formats.
Norman, Is That You
This gay sex farce tries to have it both ways -- making fun of faggots while espousing a what-will-be-will-be sexual philosophy -- and the result is a surprisingly inoffensive and politically incorrect comedy. The story revolves around Norman (Michael Warren), a handsome black man who lives with Garson (Dennis Dugan), his cute, swishy white lover in West Hollywood.
Available in VHS format.
The Ritz
Adapted from gay playwright Terrence McNalley's hilarious Broadway hit, this riotous farce stars Jack Weston as a straight Cleveland garbage collector on the lam from his Mafioso brother-in-law who hides out in a New York gay bathhouse. There, he encounters the spit-fire Googie Gomez (Rita Moreno reprising her Tony Award-winning role), a hunky, high-pitch-voiced Treat Williams, F. Murray Abraham, an active steam room and a bevy of half-naked studs.
Available in VHS format.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
"Come up to the lab, and see what's on the slab." In the cult-midnight show attraction, scientist, alien and bisexual transvestite Dr. Frank N. Furter is visited by average Americans Brad and Janet; the latter two giving themselves over to "absolute pleasure." A wacked-out, spoofy, goofy, hip and campy one-of-a-kind musical. Tim Curry is the Doc, with Susan Sarandon as Janet, Barry Bostwick as Brad, Richard O'Brien as the hunchback valet Riff-Raff, Meatloaf (again!) as rock 'n' roller Eddie, Little Nell as Columbia, and Patricia Quinnas Magenta.
Available in VHS and DVD formats.
Waiting for Guffman
This hilarious spoof/muckumentary stars director Guest as the ever-so gay Corky St. Claire, an talentless theatre director determined to put on a great show in a small town. The characterizations and petty politics are on-target, the tacky production values are gloriously captured, and there's enough in-jokes to make any semi-insider feel particularly in the loop.
Available in VHS and DVD formats.
Women in Revolt
One of the sharpest of the Andy Warhol/Paul Morrissey works, Women in Revolt is a subversively outrageous and hilariously un-PC story of three "women" who unite to fight against the yokel of male oppression and embrace the women's liberation Front (specifically, PIGS -- Politically Involved Girls) only to eventually tire of the idea and revert to their old ways. Drag queen superstars Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling and Jackie Curtis make the unlikely trio: Jackie is a frigid lesbian militarist; Candy is a rich deb and actress-wannabe; and Holly is a fashion model and incorrigible bisexual nymphomaniac.
Available in VHS and DVD formats.
Pink Flamingos
This adventure in total sleaze is still one of the most disgusting and perversely funny films ever made. Zaftig matriarch Babs Johnson (Divine) and her family of egg-adoring mom (Edith Massey) and chicken-loving son (Danny Mils) battle the repugnant Connie and Raymond Marble (Mink Stole and David Lochary) for the title of "filthiest person alive." A classic of the genre. Restored version with additional footage.
Available in VHS format.
Polyester
In this odorized ode to suburban decay, Divine is a campy delight as Baltimore housewife Francine Fishpaw, who experiences her own private hell when hubby-with-a-bad-toupee has an affair, her daughter turns out to be a slut, and her revered son is cited as the notorious foot-stomper. Then, Golden Boy Tab Tomorrow (Tab Hunter) comes into her life.
Available in VHS format.
